And he said to him, “What is your name?” And he said, “Jacob.” Then he said, “Your name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel, for you have striven with God and with men, and have prevailed.” (Genesis 32:27-28)
God’s Camp: Jacob understood that the angels God sent were a reminder that he and his entourage were under God’s protection on the journey to Canaan. Who is your protector?
Jacob Reached out to Esau: Jacob sought to mend his relationship with Esau by sending messengers with a deferential tone to alert his brother that he was returning to Canaan. How do you reset a broken relationship?
Jacob’s Strategy for Survival: When the messengers returned, they informed Jacob that Esau was coming with 400 men. A group that size implied that Esau was preparing to attack Jacob. So he then divided his entourage into two camps so that one camp would survive, reflecting his lack of faith that God would protect him as he had promised. When you face a challenge, do you take direction from the Lord, or proceed under your own strength and wisdom?
Jacob’s Humility: Sensing danger, Jacob went to God, addressing him for the first time as Yahweh, or Lord. His prayer was one of deep humility, acknowledging his unworthiness. He asks the lord for protection from Esau and reminded the Lord of his promise to multiply his offspring and protect them on the Journey. Do you meet with the Lord only when you have a need or just to spend time with him?
Jacob’s Peace Offering: Jacob’s determination to reconcile with Esau is reflected his language: “your servant Jacob” and “my lord Esau” and sending him 550 animals, both male and female (Genesis 32:13-20). How do you seek reconciliation in a broken relationship?
Jacob Wrestled with God: After sending his family away, Jacob wrestled with a man whom he recognized as God. It was an intense altercation revealing the strength of the Lord as well as Jacob’s determination to succeed under any cost, even with the pain of a displaced hip. Do you carve out time from your routine to be alone with God? Have you experienced a crisis experience requiring total surrendered to the Lord? Do you understand explicitly that aside from the Lord you cannot do anything worthy of his love on your own?
Name Change: As the Lord changed the names of Abraham and Sarah when they placed their trust in him, he changed the name of Jacob to Israel. When we surrender our lives to the Lord, he changes our identity.
Have you had an intense encounter with God? Did he change you?? Do you have a new identity?
I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. (John 15:5)
