Then Laban said to Jacob, “See this heap and the pillar, which I have set between you and me. This heap is a witness, and the pillar is a witness, that I will not pass over this heap to you, and you will not pass over this heap and this pillar to me, to do harm. The God of Abraham and the God of Nahor, the God of their father, judge between us.” So Jacob swore by the Fear of his father Isaac. (Genesis 31:51-53)
Conflict with Laban
Laban sons thought that Jacob’s growing prosperity came at their father’s expense. Jacob was also aware he had lost favor with Laban. As tensions grew, the Lord directed Jacob to return to Canaan. Jacob reported the situation and plans to Rachel and Leah giving God the credit for his success. They acknowledged that Laban had “disinherited” them and agreed to leave. How do you respond when you are falsely accused?
Laban Warned
Jacob took his wives, flocks and possessions and left for Canaan but not before Rachael stole Laban’s household gods. Laban pursued them, but the Lord warned him not to say anything, good or bad, to Jacob. How carefully do you choose your words?
Conflict with the Lord
When Laban caught up with Jacob he accused him of trickery because he had departed in secret. Laban then searched for the household gods, but Rachel tricked him and he did not find them. Jacob became angry and explained how he had served Laban for twenty years and how Laban had deceived him “ten times.” Are there things in your life that distract you from your commitment to the Lord?
The Covenant
Laban continued to ignore all that Jacob had done for him. He proposed a covenant with Jacob, perhaps as an attempt to protect his daughters and grandchildren.
Jacob’s Altar and Sacrifice
Jacob agreed and set up a pillar representing his faith in one God. In turn, Laban’s men gathered stones representing Laban’s gods. The pillar and stones are seen as divine witnesses to the covenant that Jacob would not harm Laban. Jacob then built an altar, made a sacrifice, and offered his kinsmen bread. This is the first mention of Jacob building an altar and making a sacrifice. The next day Laban departed for Paddan-aram and Jacob and his family left the hill country for Canaan. Do you have the peace of God in your relationships with those of different background and faith, or even those you do not like?
Seek peace with others.
