Before he had finished [praying], behold, Rebekah, . . . came out with her water jar on her shoulder. . . . Now Isaac had returned from Beer-lahai-roi and was dwelling in the Negeb. And Isaac went out to meditate in the field toward evening. And he lifted up his eyes and saw, and behold, there were camels coming. (Genesis 24:15, 62-63)
Abraham’s Instructions. Abraham, wanting to find a wife for Isaac, directed a trusted servant to go to “my country” to find a wife for him. Further, he told the servant not to look for a Canaanite wife and not to take Isaac with him. His concern was that Isaac would be led a stray by a Canaanite wife and feared Isaac would not return to the promised land. The servant swore to these conditions.
Believers are not to be unequally yoked in marriage (2 Corinthians 6:14).
Divine Appointment. Upon arrival at the city of Nahor, he stopped at a spring and prayed that the Lord to send a woman to draw water who was suitable for Isaac. Rebekah arrived as he finished his prayer and drew water for him and his camels. Rebekah told him that she was the granddaughter of Abraham’s brother, Nahor and offered the men lodging with her family. The servant then gave thanks to the Lord for leading him to Rebekah.
