These are the days of the years of Abraham’s life, 175 years. Abraham breathed his last and died in a good old age, an old man and full of years, and was gathered to his people. Isaac and Ishmael his sons buried him in the cave of Machpelah, in the field of Ephron the son of Zohar the Hittite, east of Mamre. (Genesis 25:7-8)
Abraham Died. After Sarah died Abraham married Keturah, probably a concubine, and bore him six sons. Abraham sent the sons and their descendants away to the east with gifts but gave his inheritance to Isaac. When Abraham died, Isaac and Ismael buried him in the cave at Machpelah alongside Sarah. The narrative goes on to list the twelve sons of Ishmael and where they settled.
Choice: What is more important, a spiritual legacy or a material legacy?
From Abraham to Isaac. Lists of descendants and the words “These are the generations of ______ . . . ” are used in Genesis to mark a transition between generations. Here it is the transition from Abraham to Isaac.
Esau and Jacob. At first Rebekah was barren but Isaac prayed, and she conceived and bore him twin sons, Esau and Jacob. The two struggled in the womb and the Lord explained that the younger would have authority over the older. As they grew, Isaac loved Esau because he was a hunter and Rebekah love Jacob because he was quiet and lived in tents.
Choice: To play or not to play favorites in the family.
Esau’s Birthright. Esau came in from the field hungry and exhausted and sold his right as the first born for a bowl of Jacob’s stew. The text says that “Esau despised his birthright,” that is, his destiny or right to be in the lineage of Christ. Jacob, on the other hand, stole the birthright from Esau. Jacob, the deceiver, knew what he was doing.
