So it came about in the morning that, behold, it was Leah! And he said to Laban, “What is this you have done to me? Was it not for Rachel that I served with you? Why then have you deceived me?” But Laban said, “It is not the practice in our place, to marry off the younger before the first-born. (Genesis 29:25)
People of the East: Instead of identifying Jacob’s location as Haran or Paddan Aram, the author describes it as “the land of the people of the east.” Some scholars believe it refers to people who have been expelled or have moved away from God. Moreover, Laban refers to “the God of your father when addressing Jacob in 31:29. Further, Rachel stole her father’s gods (Genesis 31:19-37). Note: When the Lord banished Adam and Eve from the garden, he drove them to the east (Genesis 3:24). Abraham sent his sons by Katurah to the east away from Isaac (Genesis 25:6).
Where are you in your relationship with the Lord?
Meeting the Family: Jacob was at Haran to obtain a wife. Compare this with Abraham’s servant sent to secure a wife for Isaac (Genesis 24): (1) The servant prayed for guidance, Jacob did not; (2) Rebekah gave water to the servant’s camels and is identified as the one chosen to be Isaac’s wife, Jacob provided water to Rachael’s sheep and thereby established a bond with Laban, his uncle. Upon discovery that Jacob was his nephew, Laban greeted him warmly and invited him to stay a month. Jacob was strongly attracted to beautiful Rachael. On the other hand, “Leah’s eyes were weak” (v17) meaning she was less attractive.
Do you seek guidance from the Lord for the tasks ahead?
The Agreement: Jacob agreed to work for Laban for seven years and in return Laban promised Jacob he could marry Rachael. Because he loved Rachael, the seven years passed quickly.
The Deceiver Deceived: The time came for the wedding feast. When evening came, Laban substituted Leah for Rachael which Jacob did not discover until morning. Laban explained it was the cultural tradition that the older sister be married first. Jacob then worked for Laban another seven years so he could marry Rachael.
Are you willing to wait fourteen years for the Lord to fulfill a promise?
Leah’s Sons: While Rachael was baren, Leah bore four sons in hopes of gaining Jacob’s love (Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah).
