He turned to her at the roadside and said, “Come, let me come in to you,” for he did not know that she was his daughter-in-law. (Genesis 38:16)
Judah’s Sons: Judah moved from Bethel to Adullah located southwest of Bethlehem. There he met an unnamed Canaanite woman who bore him three sons: Er, Onan, and Shelah. Er married Tamar but the Lord killed Er because he was wicked. Onan was required to marry Tamar to produce children for his brother, known as the levirate marriage. But he “spilled his seed on the ground” because the children would not be his legacy. Therefore, the Lord killed him. Judah, thinking that Shelah might die also, sent Tamar back to her father as a widow to wait until Shelah was old enough to father a child.
Tamar’s Deception: When Shela matured and Judah did not present him to Tamar for marriage, she disguised herself as a prostitute at the entrance to Enaim, to trap Judah. It was an ancient custom to place brothels near city gates. Judah propositioned her, promising her a goat in return. Since Judah did not have a goat at that time, she asked for Judah’s seal with its cord and a staff as a pledge. These items were a form of identification. She became pregnant and was accused of being immoral. However, she revealed Judah’s signet, cord, and staff proving that Judah, her father-in law, was the father.
The Birth of Perez: Tamar delivered twins. One of the twins, Zerah, put his hand out and the midwife placed a scarlet band on it to identify him as the first born. However, Perez as born first. Scholars believe the detailed description of the birth indicated that Perez would be a person of some importance. In fact, Perez’s line leads to David and on to Jesus.
Note that Judah chose to leave his family. It was not by direction of the Lord as was the case with Abraham and Jacob (12:1, 31:3). Moreover, he married a Canaanite woman which was not acceptable to the descendants of Abraham (24:3, 26:23-35, and 28:1). Further, Judah did not keep the promise of giving Shelah in marriage to Tamar. And he easily gave into a base desire by having intercourse with what he perceived to be a prostitute making Perez the product of incest. Yet, the lineage of Judah extends through Perez to David and Jesus. “For the LORD Almighty has purposed, and who can thwart him? His hand is stretched out, and who can turn it back?” (Isaiah 14:27).
Do you act before asking God for direction? Do you act when you know it is wrong? Do you act on impulse? Are you controlled by your passions? Do you know that the Lord can rescue you from a self-absorbed life?
God rescues us by breaking us, by shattering our strength and wiping out our resistance. A. W. Tozer
