Because of the violence done to your brother Jacob, shame shall cover you, and you shall be cut off forever. (Obadiah 10)
Edom’s Failure to Stand with Israel (10-11): The Lord accused Edom standing by when Jerusalem was being attacked. In fact, the Lord claims their inaction was the same as participating in the battle against Israel. This may be a reference to the destruction of Jerusalem in 586 BC by the Babylonians. Like Esau’s pursuit of Jacob (Gernesis27-33), the Edomites acted like invaders and failed to do right, failing to support Jerusalem when it was under attack.
Edom Should Not Have . . . (12-14): The NASB and Interlinear translation of these verses set Edom’s actions in the past-tense; that is after the fall of Jerusalem. Other translations view the verses as warnings. These three verses list an eight-count indictment against Edom. They should not have:
1. Watched as Israel was being led captive
2. Rejoiced as their day of destruction
3. Been arrogant in the face of their distress
4. Entered Jerusalem when it was under attack
5. Watched while the people were in distress
6. Taken their possession or wealth when they were in distress
7. Cut off the people who escaped
8. Delivered Israel into the invader’s hands
“Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. For I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink, I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not clothe me, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.’ (Matthew 25:41-43)
