So he went in to his father and said, “My father.” And he said, “Here I am. Who are you, my son?” Jacob said to his father, “I am Esau your firstborn. I have done as you told me; now sit up and eat of my game, that your soul may bless me.” (Genesis 27:18-19)
Blindness: (1-4) This chapter is a play on Isaac’s old age and physical blindness. Underlying these events is Isaac’s blindness to the damage done by parental favoritism. Pressured by the obligation to bless his oldest son (before I die), and his appetite for wild game, Isaac asked Esau to prepare and bring him meat from a hunt.
Spiritual blindness keeps us from seeing ways to advance God’s kingdom.
Conspiracy and Deception: (5-25) Rebekah conspires with Jacob to deceive Isaac into giving Jacob the blessing due the eldest son. Dressed in Esau’s clothes and with his arms and neck covered in goat skin, Jacob pretends to be Esau and serves Isaac with a meal prepared by Rebekah.
Unless we stay in the Word, we are easily deceived.
The Blessing on Jacob: 26-29 Being deceived, Isaac gives Jacob the blessing due Esau as the first born. The blessing indicates prosperity, dominion over other nations, a curse on those who cursed him and a blessing on those who blessed him.
The Lord blesses those who are obedient.
Deception Revealed: (30-38) When Esau returns with a meal prepared from game he had killed, the deception is exposed. Isaac was emotionally distraught, and Esau responded with great bitterness and deep anger. Esau recognized that Jacob had now twice deceived him and asked his father for the blessing due him as the first born.
Deception destroys relationships: relationships with the lord and others.
The Blessing on Esau: (39-40) Isaac refused and instead told Esau that he would live in less fertile land, live based on violence, and be Jacob’s servant.
We have a choice; believe and obey and be blessed or reject Jesus offer of salvation and be cursed.
Hatred: (41-45) Esau expressed hatred for Jacob and threatened to kill him. Upon hearing that, Rebekah sent Jacob to her brother, Laban, in Haran for protection.
Does the Spirit control your emotions or do your emotions control you?
A Wife for Jacob: (46) Rebekah told Isaac that she sent Jacob to Laban to find a wife to prevent him from marrying a Canaanite woman. While that was true, it was not the main reason, gives Isaac a cover story and thereby deceiving Isaac again.
A family of deceivers: Abraham, Isaac, Rebekah, and Jacob.
What would you expect? Sin will not come to you, saying, "I am sin." It would do little harm if it did. Sin always seems "good, and pleasant, and desirable," at the time of commission. J. C. Ryle
