From there Abraham journeyed toward the territory of the Negeb and lived between Kadesh and Shur; and he sojourned in Gerar. And Abraham said of Sarah his wife, “She is my sister.” And Abimelech king of Gerar sent and took Sarah (Genesis 20:1-2).
When Abraham lived in Gerar, he claimed Sarah to be his sister and included her in the ruse. He did this because he assumed the region was godless (v11) and worried his life would be threatened. Clearly, he trusted in his own schemes and not the Lord.
Abimelech, king of Gerar, took Sarah in. But the Lord, protected Sarah by bringing disease on the king and kept the women of his house from bearing children. Further, he informed Abimelech in a dream that Sarah was Abraham’s wife, and that Abraham was a prophet. Abimelech’s vision shows that he was God fearing. Note that Abraham’s sin had consequences on others.
Our worries often turn out to be without basis and cause us to make a mess things.
The Lord, in his power and personal interest, intervened on behalf of Abraham and Sarah. Abimelech returned Sarah untouched, questioned Abraham’s integrity and why he had been misled. Because the Lord identified Abraham as a prophet, Abimelech honored Abraham by giving him sheep and oxen, male and female servants, and land. Abraham then, in his role as intercessor, prayed and the Lord restored Abimelech’s health and freed the women from being baren.
Are you an intercessor?
Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. (Proverbs 3:5-6)
