The Lord visited Sarah as he had said, and the Lord did to Sarah as he had promised. And Sarah conceived and bore Abraham a son in his old age at the time of which God had spoken to him. Abraham called the name of his son who was born to him, whom Sarah bore him, Isaac (Genesis 21:1-3).
“The Lord visited” Sarah, over ninth years old, and she conceived and bore Abraham the son promised in 15:4-6; 17:6, 16; and 18:10, 14. Following the Lord’s instructions, Abraham called the boy Isaac (he laughs) and circumcised him on the eighth day.
At the celebration of Isaac’s weaning, Ismael laughed (mocked) Isaac. From Sarah’s reaction, his misbehavior was based on his perceived inheritance as the first-born son of Abraham. Therefore, Sarah asked Abraham to send Hagar and Ismael away. The Lord confirmed to Abraham that Isaac was the promised offspring, but a great nation would come from Ismael. So, Abraham sent Hagar and Ismael off into the desert with bread and water.
Do you separate yourself from people that interfere with God’s plan for your life?
When the bread and water ran out and Hagar and Isaac were near death, the Lord sent an angel to comfort Hannah and told her a great nation would come from Ismael. The Lord provided water for them. And Hagar found a wife for Ismael from Egypt.
God responds to those who call on him.
Because of Abrahams imposing presence in the region, Abimelech and the commander of his army, acknowledging that the hand of God was on Abraham, proposed a treaty. Abraham agreed and affirmed the agreement with oxen and sheep.
We are to make peace with our neighbors.
When Abimelech’s servants seized Abraham’s well, Abraham gave Abimelech seven ewe lambs to confirm that it was his. The place of this covenant is called Beersheba. And Abraham and Abimelech went their separate ways.
God confirms his covenant with his people with grace, peace, and blessings.
