They killed Hamor and his son Shechem with the sword and took Dinah out of Shechem’s house and went away. The sons of Jacob came upon the slain and plundered the city, because they had defiled their sister. They took their flocks and their herds, their donkeys, and whatever was in the city and in the field. All their wealth, all their little ones and their wives, all that was in the houses, they captured and plundered (Genesis 34:26-29).
Women of the Land: Dinah, Leah’s daughter went out to see the “women of the land.” This term was used negatively by Rebekah in expressing concern that Jacob would marry Hittite women (Genesis 27:46).
Rape of Dinah: When Shechem saw Dinah, he seized her and raped her. He then fell in love with her and began overtures to take her as his wife.
Brothers Reaction: The brothers were angry and engaged in discussions with Hamor. Hamor suggested that in return for Shechem marrying Dinah, Jacob’s sons could marry Hamor’s daughters and offered to open the land and trade with Jacob’s clan. Shechem further suggested he would pay any bride price for Dinah. Jacob’s sons declared that Dinah could marry on the condition that all Hamor’s men be circumcised. Hamor agreed.
Killing Field: While circumcision was the correct condition for the merger of the two groups, Jacob’s sons deceived Hamor by using the men’s incapacitation to carry out revenge on Shechem. Simeon and Levi then slaughtered Hamor, Shechem and all the men of the city. Jacob’s sons then plundered the city and fields, taking everything: women children, flocks, and possessions.
Jacob’s Reaction: When Jacob heard what his sons had done, he was livid. He berated Simeon and Levi fearing that the consequences of their action would bring down the wrath of the people of the land.
Anger: Anger is an emotion; it is not good or bad. The issue is how we respond when we are angry. We have a choice; we can give in to a baser reaction or respond under the Spirit’s control. When angry, do you apply a scorched earth approach to making things right? Or do you reply on God to be in your actions?
Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, and give no opportunity to the devil. (Ephesians 4:26-27)
