10 For it was fitting that he, for whom and by whom all things exist, in bringing many sons to glory, should make the founder of their salvation perfect through suffering. 11 For he who sanctifies and those who are sanctified all have one source. That is why he is not ashamed to call them brothers, 12 saying, “I will tell of your name to my brothers; in the midst of the congregation I will sing your praise.” 13 And again, “I will put my trust in him.” And again, “Behold, I and the children God has given me.” (Hebrews 2:10-13)
Jesus is Authorized (v10): In continuing the thought from Psalm 8, the author draws the contrast between Jesus and man. It was only through Jesus, being perfect, glorified, honored, and qualified through his suffering, that our salvation is perfected. With his suffering he identifies with us at the deepest level of pain. By this he brings many into the kingdom of God and calls them sons.
One Source (v11): Jesus sanctifies or sets people apart for salvation. By this he accepts them and brings them into his kingdom as brothers. Some commentators believe “one source” refers to the humanity of Jesus. Others believe the author is referring to the audience’s common descent from Abraham. Still others believe the reference is to God the Father.
Adoption into the Family (v12-13): The writer quotes from Psalm 22 which begins with a cry of desolation (the suffering and death of Christ) and ends with praise (reflecting the Lord’s resurrection). This establishes the way the Lord identifies with believers (the congregation or church), renders the work of salvation complete, and calls believers to join him in worship. Further, by quoting Isaiah 8:17, the author encourages believers to place their trust in the Father just as Christ placed is trust in his Father. He continues by quoting Isaiah 8:18 and draws the parallel between Isaiah and his children and the unity we have as a part of God’s family. We are the children of God who has placed us under the protection and care of the Son.
Challenge: Have you made the suffering, death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus; the Son of God personal? Have you experienced the assurance of salvation and the transforming power of the Holy Spirit? Are you living out your calling together with other members of his family?
