20 And it was not without an oath. For those who formerly became priests were made such without an oath, 21 but this one was made a priest with an oath by the one who said to him: “The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind, ‘You are a priest forever.’” 22 This makes Jesus the guarantor of a better covenant. (7:20-22)
The New Priest (20-21): with Levitical priests was that thy were installed based on lineage and law not an oath, whereas the new priest was appointed by an oath proclaimed by the absolute, unchanging authority of the Lord himself. Further, the priesthood established through Levi was not set up or promised to be eternal. It was established by God through the law as a promise or pathway to a future, better priesthood, that of Christ.
The Superior Covenant (22): That better priesthood was based on God’s oath and assured or guaranteed by Jesus making the new covenant superior to the Mosaic covenant.
Challenge: Are you under the mercy and grace of the new covenant? Are you under the priesthood of Jesus? Are you experiencing a difference in your life as a result?
