1Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it. 2 For since the message declared by angels proved to be reliable, and every transgression or disobedience received a just retribution, 3 how shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation? It was declared at first by the Lord, and it was attested to us by those who heard, 4 while God also bore witness by signs and wonders and various miracles and by gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will.
In the first chapter, the author was concerned about understanding Jesus deity as the Son of God. In chapter 2, the focus is on Jesus as the Son of Man that is, he lived, ministered, and died as a human. The writer was worried that his audience would drift away from the gospel message of Jesus: his death for our sins. He points out four ways the message was sent:
(v2) It was given reliably in the Old Testament by angels in the form of the law to Moses and then the people.
(v3) It was declared by the Lord himself.
(v3) it was then repeated by those who saw and heard it.
(v4) It was confirmed through signs, wonders and spiritual gifts as dispensed as the Lord wills.
The message to his audience is the same for us today: we are to be steadfast in our faith, not sliding way under the pressure of our surrounding culture. Nor are we to become cafeteria Christians, that is picking and choosing where we want to be obedient.
Challenge: Are you living life paying close attention to the gospel message and the freedom it offers?
