And Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine. (He was priest of God Most High.) And he blessed [Abram]. (Genesis 14:18-19)
This chapter describes the warfare and rebellion in and around the valley of the Dead Sea over a period of several years. During these battles, Sodom and Gomorrah were captured including Lot, his family, and his possessions. Abram was alerted to the capture of Lot and pursued his captors with 318 of his “trained” men, In a nighttime battle, Abram rescued Lot and plundered the enemy, taking their possessions, women, and people.
Following Abram’s victory and the restoration of the king of Sodom, Abram and the returning kings were met by the king Sodom and Melchizedek (King of Righteousness – Hebrews 7:2), the priest of the Most High God who provided bread and wine. Melchizedek Blessed Abram and Abram gave him a tenth of everything.
In contrast, king of Sodom showed disrespect to Abram- perhaps even cursed him. He showed no gratitude for being rescued and proposed an alliance with Abram with conditions. In response, Abram rejected the offer indicating his reliance on God not on human alliances and material possession.
Application: The world is at war with righteousness and those who are of the kingdom of God. It is spiritual warfare. As believers, we are deep in the battle. There are those who need to be rescued and when they are the Lord will bless and the world will curse (12:3).
There is no greater blessing than being present when God rescues a soul from Hell.
